Create a Perfect Garden with these Tips and Ideas

In the words of Gertrude Jekyll-“The love of gardening is a seed once sown that never dies”. Growing plants has been a practice since times immemorial, and it probably hasn’t been more popular than it is today. Who wouldn’t rejoice at the sight of a colorful riot of flowers in the front yard or fresh veggies and herbs in the backyard? But as Liberty Hyde Bailey said-“A garden requires patient labor and attention. Plants do not grow merely to satisfy ambitions or to fulfill good intentions. They thrive because someone expended effort on them.”

It is essential to look at your garden as a whole before deciding on what to plant. Also, it is important to know the amount of sunlight the different areas of your garden receive. Last but not the least, is to decide what you want your garden space to be – an area to grow vegetables, to sunbathe, to enjoy a cuppa on a bright, sunny day, to entertain friends over an alfresco meal or, all of the aforementioned. The task of planning a garden becomes a lot simpler if one begins at the beginning. So here are some tips to help you turn the garden of your dreams into reality:

1. Patios

Almost every garden has a special area for sitting out that is generally referred to as a patio. Invariably, a patio is positioned next to the house or nearby. In any case, it should ideally be in a sunny, sheltered spot. A patio is an ideal spot for growing plants in containers. As for the shape of the patio, one could go beyond the conventional square or rectangle. A circular patio, for instance, would look good in many gardens. When laying the patio floor, leave gaps for planting creeping and mat forming plants such as thymes and raoulias. You could have a special feature like a timber pergola to partially cover the patio-with a grapevine trained over it to provide shade.

2) Landscaping

The design and look of the whole garden are determined by the layout and the color of the paving used. There is a wide array of paving stones and tiles available, depending on the theme of the garden. If an English country feel, is what you are looking for, a golden stone, the mixed pattern should do the trick. Alternatively, if a French country look is what appeals to you, go for white and grey stones laid randomly. It is also important to coordinate the plants you plan to grow with the paving. Ideally, white and purple blooms go well with grey and white stones while pink and lavender blend perfectly with golden paving.

3) Lawn, Borders, and Boundaries

The shape of your lawn can vary as per your imagination-square, oval, circular-the options are almost limitless. When it comes to borders though, some amount of harmony wouldn’t hurt. Planting in repeated patterns would help toward this end. It would be a good idea to use evergreen shrubs at the ends and fill the remaining area with a combination of small shrubs and flowering plants. Use small plants in front of taller ones so that all the blooms are visible to the onlooker. Boundaries are an important part of the overall aesthetics of any well planned garden. So, it goes without saying that they should be pleasing to the eye. One could either have the same type of fence with climbers in coordinating colors or you could whitewash the fences and clad them with trellis.
Put together a glamourous garden simply by developing fun plant combos. Search for great color or texture contrasts. Here, for instance, the ferny, blue-green foliage of bleeding heart is an amazing contrast for the golden carpet of Irish moss. Both are accented accurately and lovingly by red sedum.

4) Planting-Do's and Don’ts

  • Before you begin planting, it is very important to factor in, the space available. This will give you an idea about how many plants you can comfortably accommodate in the given area.
  • Make a note of the growing conditions viz. the direction of the sun and wind, how hot or dry or cool or shady the place is.
  • Take into account the proximity to the house.
  • An analysis of the soil type is essential. In case of difficulty, any nursery should be willing to offer help.
  • Check the moisture level. It is important to gauge if the area is a low spot that collects moisture or a slope that lets water run and dries off rapidly.

5) The Fun Part-what to plant?

  • You could plant in odd numbered groups with a variety of blooms ranging from daisy types, flat topped flowers, spiky blossoms, floral sprays, or mounding flowers.
  • For an interesting twist and to break the monotony introduce some ornamental grass.
  • Remember that hues are everything when it comes to a garden. So, plant for long lasting color. Fill your garden with perennials that are unaffected by the fickleness of seasons.
  • Have plants of varying heights to add depth and texture to your garden.
  • It might seem obvious but remember to take into account the mature height of the plant, before planting.
  • Use ground cover for a lush look.
  • Evergreen plants can add a lovely dimension to any garden space.

6) Space and Decor

While it is important to have aesthetic and matching garden furniture, one must be practical too. There should be sufficient room to walk around the table and also to pull out the chairs. Smaller spaces call for folding furniture or L shaped sofas. Vertical planting is advisable in such cases as are hanging baskets.
Larger spaces can have the luxury of matching sets or sun lounges or even swing seats. You could even create a yoga studio, a home office, or additional accommodation for guests. Some space could be zoned off and a section reserved for kids, with outdoor toys and sand tables. In either case, irrespective of the size of your garden space, cozy decor can turn it into a relaxing haven. Be generous with outdoor cushions, rugs, knit throws, and lanterns. Citronella candles not only add to the aesthetics but also keep pesky bugs away.

7) Lights and Ornaments

It goes without being said that lights and ornaments are the icings on the cake. Create an atmosphere and suffuse your garden with a warm glow using fairy lights, string bulbs, standing lights, table lamps, or candles. When it comes to ornaments, don’t choose indiscriminately. Too big and the ornament will overwhelm the space; too small and it will look lost. So exercise your choice wisely and integrate accessories with your garden space.

8) Screening

Pergolas, fences, potted trees, all make excellent screens. Any of these options can be exercised depending on your requirements. There are a variety of plants you can trail onto a screen-clematis, bougainvillea, climbing roses, etc.

9) Birds and Bees

Along with the flora, it would be a good idea to give a thought to the fauna too. No garden is complete without the buzzing of bees, or the flitting of colorful butterflies or the melodious trilling of birds, so, make bee friendly plants and bird feeders a part of your garden.

10. Go for landscape Pro

Go for designing gardens that carry the eye from the earth to the sky. Anchor borders and beds with structural plants, such as tall shrubs, or trees, and then layer in smaller shrubs, climbing vines, sprawling ground covers, and varying hight perennials. Smartly determine whether you’re planning for a casual cottage look, clipped formal look, or a native prairie or a mix of styles. When planning your garden design, including fountains, arbors, pathways, ponds, large containers, statuary, and garden benches that attract both attention and foot traffic through the garden.

11. Search for interesting edging

Innovative edging offers your garden a crisp and clean look. But you must be creative and add interest by making you’re edging a design element. Here, the wide swath of rock between the plantings and lawn offers the feel of a flowing river.
