We’ve all experienced it at one time or another – you go to put something away but just cannot find the space!
When living in a smaller space, which we experience many times in India, it can be difficult to find great storage ideas. There may not be space to add a large unit, wardrobe or chest without overwhelming the room in your home. But if you are looking for unbeatable storage solutions, look no further! We’ve got you covered.
1. Space out your furniture.
You may be tempted to push your furniture into a corner or against the wall to create more space, but this won’t necessarily make the space look larger.
Placing each piece with plenty of space around it will add to the illusion of more room.
home too!
2. Stick to lighter shades.
Pale colours such as cream, grey, apple white, mint, buttermilk and sky blue are perfect for adding a little interest and personality to a space without making it feel smaller. No matter what your favourite colour is, there’s bound to be a pastel hue that’s appropriate.
3. Make your furniture multitask.
Multifunctional furniture is key when you’re short on space, so try to invest in pieces that can be used in more ways that one!
4. Reflections can be deceiving.
Seeing the reflection of a room in a mirror can often give the illusion of a much larger space. While you may not want to cover your entire wall in mirrors to double the ‘size’ of the room, try a large wall or standing mirror to add depth to an area, or add several on an accent wall for an ensemble look.
5. Foldaway Furniture is your friend.
Why take up space when you don’t need to? Try looking into foldaway furniture such as dining tables that can be put away when not in use.
6. Stick to simplicity: black and white
A monochromatic theme – primarily a focus on white or light colours will open up your space drastically, allowing for an ‘open air’ feel. Black, when used in moderation in a white room, will add depth without making the room feel smaller.
7. Open up your windows.
Dark drapes and thick curtains will block out the light and prevent the look of spaciousness provided by most windows.
Instead, go for an uncovered look and let the light shine through as you enjoy the landscape outside. Your room will feel larger and more open. If you do need some privacy, try some dreamy, airy white drapes.
8. Make a statement.
Statement pieces aren’t just for large rooms! Using a large piece of furniture rather than several small ones like a Radha Hrishna Mural or a Canvas painting can help to fill the space comfortably without it looking cluttered.
9. Make your ceiling pop.
Although keeping your walls light will make the room appear larger, that doesn’t mean you can’t have a bright or dark ceiling! A unique colour above the room will add depth, while also creating an illusion of higher ceilings and spaciousness.
10. Create a display of colour.
Rather than overwhelming a smaller space with endless colour and potential clashes, set up a small display of coordinated, colourful items that you’d be happy to show off in your home.
